Hyundai cars come with a five-year factory warranty. That's two years more generous than the industry standard.
We'll take a look at the brand's warranty coverage and explain what it does and doesn't cover. In addition, we'll explain whether the warranty is transferable, and what options you have once the manufacturer coverage runs out.
How long is Hyundai's manufacturer warranty?
As you'll have spotted from the title, Hyundai's factory warranty for most major parts lasts for five years. That's counted as five years from the date the vehicle was first registered – you can find this date using the DVLA's vehicle information checker.
For private vehicles, Hyundai's warranty also lasts for an unlimited mileage, so even drivers who cover lots of miles every year will still be protected. If the vehicle is used as a private hire car, taxi or driving school vehicle at any point during the warranty period, the mileage limit becomes 100,000 miles.
What does Hyundai's 5-year warranty cover?
Hyundai's warranty covers all major parts for five years. Bear in mind that certain parts are considered consumable items, and are covered for different periods. You can find full details in Hyundai's warranty terms and conditions, but key examples include:
- Air-con regas – 6 months/10,000 miles
- Wiper blades – 24 months/10,000 miles
- Fuses and bulbs – 24 months/10,000 miles
- Clutch disc – 24 months/10,000 miles
- V belts – 24 months/10,000 miles
- 12V battery – 24 months/unlimited mileage
- Service items (oil, filters, spark plugs etc) – 24 months/10,000 miles
- Wheel bearings – 60 months/60,000 miles
- Ball joints, bushes, track rod ends – 60 months/60,000 miles
- Dampers, struts – 60 months/60,000 miles
- Rubber components – 60 months/60,000 miles
- Tyres – covered by tyre manufacturer
Your vehicle's paintwork is also included in the five-year warranty. Note that Hyundai will only cover 'defects attributable to the actual paint materials or metal panel work'. Cosmetic issues are only covered for the first 12 months, while 'deterioration, staining or corrosion' deemed to fall within 'normal exposure' will not be covered.
What does Hyundai's 5-year warranty not cover?
There are quite a lot of specific terms and conditions that will void your Hyundai factory warranty. We suggest you check the company's T&Cs page for complete details.
The most important thing to keep your warranty intact is to maintain your Hyundai in line with its stated service intervals – usually every 12 months or 10,000 miles, whichever comes first. You must also make sure parts and repairs are carried out to the manufacturer's stated standards – most UK service stations are capable of this, but the easiest way to guarantee it is to service your car at a Hyundai dealer.
Any accident damage that goes ignored or any repairs to damage that aren't carried out to Hyundai's standards will also likely void your car's warranty. You'll also lose warranty coverage if you modify your vehicle in any way or install any third-party software to your car's digital systems. Any racing, rallying, driving competitions, speed or endurance events will also void your warranty. Note that Hyundai's high-performance 'N' cars can be used on track days without voiding their warranties provided they're not competitive events.
Is Hyundai's 5-year warranty transferable?
Yes. Assuming you've stuck to the T&Cs of your Hyundai's warranty, any remaining coverage will automatically transfer to the new owner if you sell the car within its first five years on the road.
Plenty of used Hyundai cars for sale at Motorpoint have a good portion of their factory warranty remaining. You can check on each vehicle's individual advert how much warranty cover remains.
How long is Hyundai's EV battery warranty?
The high-voltage battery packs used in Hyundai EVs, plug-in hybrids and full 'self-charging' hybrids built after 2020 are covered by an eight-year, 100,000-mile warranty. That figure is 125,000 miles for EVs built before 2020. If the vehicle is used as a private hire, taxi or driving school vehicle at any point, this becomes five years and 100,000 miles.
Battery packs will be deemed to have 'failed' if their maximum capacity falls below 70% of its original figure within the warranty period. The warranty technically covers you for repairs to the high-voltage battery to bring it back above that 70% capacity figure but, if repairs aren't possible, Hyundai will replace the whole pack.
What is Hyundai's anti-perforation (rust) warranty?
Hyundai's warranty provides anti-perforation coverage – essentially protection against rust – for a different length of time. This coverage lasts for 12 years from the vehicle's date of registration.
Like other warranty items, any rust that arises from damage you've caused to the car won't be covered by the anti-perforation warranty.
Can you extend Hyundai's 5-year warranty?
There is no option to extend the Hyundai factory warranty from the manufacturer directly. Some Hyundai dealerships might independently offer extended warranties that go beyond the five-year coverage window.
If you buy a used Hyundai from Motorpoint, you have the option to add an extended warranty that kicks in once the original factory coverage expires. This coverage is available for 12, 24 or 36 months.
Does Hyundai's 5-year warranty apply to all Hyundais?
Yes. All Hyundai car models are covered by the brand's warranty. That extends from the compact Hyundai i10 all the way up to the seven-seat Hyundai Santa Fe.
