Toyota is the current leader for warranty coverage in the UK.
The brand offers an unmatched 10-year warranty on its vehicles if you have them serviced at a Toyota dealership. This scheme also applies to cars from Toyota's luxury brand, Lexus.
We'll take a close look at Toyota's warranty here and explain what vehicles it applies to and what you have to do to access it.
Toyota 10-year warranty overview
- Applies to all Toyota models until they reach 10 years old or 100,000 miles
- Treated as an additional warranty on top of the default three-year, 60,000-mile warranty
- Began in 2021
- Also applies to Toyotas registered before 2021, but their five-year default warranty is unchanged
- Each extra year of the 10-year term starts when you service your car at a Toyota dealership
- Used cars without full dealer history are covered
- Additional warranty also applies to Lexus models
How long is Toyota's manufacturer warranty?
Since 1 June 2021, Toyota's default warranty is for three years or 60,000 miles from the car's first registration, whichever comes first. This is broadly in line with current industry standards. The difference is that Toyota gives you another 12 months and 10,000 miles of warranty cover every time you have your car serviced at a Toyota dealership until it's 10 years old or reaches a total of 100,000 miles.
This also applies to older Toyota and Lexus models until they hit 10 years old. For these cars, Toyota will still honour any remaining balance of their default five-year, 100,000-mile factory warranty – then they can benefit from another five years of the additional 10-year warranty. If you'd like to check when your car was registered, you can use the DVLA's vehicle information checker.
Unlike some manufacturer warranties, Toyota will honour each 12-month extension of its cover, even if the car has not previously been maintained at Toyota dealerships. That means you could buy a used Toyota that's four years old, for example, and still take advantage of another year's coverage once your vehicle has been serviced at a Toyota dealer.
What does Toyota's 10-year warranty cover?
Toyota's 10-year warranty covers most major mechanical and electrical components on your car. Parts that are considered wear and tear items like tyres, for example, will not be covered by the manufacturer's warranty. For a detailed list of the parts covered, check out Toyota's warranty terms and conditions, but key components include:
- Engine
- Fuel system
- Cooling system
- Gearbox
- Transfer case and differentials
- Driveline
- Suspension
- Steering system
- Braking system
- Air conditioning and heating
- Electrical parts
- Hybrid components
- Hydrogen fuel cell components
- EV drive components
Note that 'hybrid components' does not include the main high-voltage battery itself, as this is covered by a separate warranty, which we'll cover below. The same separate warranty also applies to the high-voltage battery in Toyota's EVs.
Paint defects caused during the manufacture of your Toyota are covered under the standard three-year warranty. Any paint issues after this point are not covered by the 10-year warranty.
What does Toyota's 10-year warranty not cover?
There are many specific exclusions and conditions that apply to Toyota's default three-year and additional 10-year warranty. You can read the company's T&Cs page for an exhaustive list of your rights and responsibilities.
However, the main takeaway is you need to keep your Toyota serviced in line with recommended intervals if you want to continue benefiting from the 10-year warranty. That means a service every 12 months or 10,000 miles, whichever comes first, using Toyota-approved parts and processes. Do this and you'll remain within the terms of your default three-year warranty, or qualify for another year of coverage from the additional 10-year warranty once the car is serviced at a Toyota dealership.
You won't be covered by either the default or the additional warranty for any damage caused to the car – regardless of whether it was your fault. In other words, Toyota will generally only cover parts that break because they weren't made or assembled properly, and won't cover any fault that arises due to an accident or misuse. That also means your warranty cover will be nullified if you use the vehicle for racing or extreme off-road driving, and you won't be covered if you modify your vehicle in any way.
Is Toyota's 10-year warranty transferable?
Yes, the Toyota 10-year warranty is transferable if you sell your vehicle to someone else, or buy a used Toyota. It applies to all Toyota models that are under 10 years old, or with less than 100,000 miles, provided the warranty's T&Cs have not been voided.
That means all used Toyotas for sale at Motorpoint qualify for the additional warranty cover. Toyotas displayed by Motorpoint show the remaining amount of their default three-year warranty, as you'll need to activate each extra year of the additional 10-year cover by servicing at a Toyota dealer.
How long is Toyota's hybrid and EV battery warranty?
Most of Toyota's range is available with hybrid power, so a lot of its cars come with high-voltage battery packs. Toyota warranties its hybrid batteries for up to 15 years from the car's registration, as long as you get a hybrid battery health check at a Toyota dealership every year. These health checks are normally conducted at the same time as getting the car serviced.
As for EVs, Toyota's range isn't quite so extensive. For example, the high-voltage battery in the Toyota bZ4X SUV is covered for 10 years from the date of registration. This is made up of eight years of default factory coverage, with an additional two years available if you get an annual EV battery health check at a Toyota dealership – again, normally carried out with your regular service. The EV battery warranty guarantees the pack will retain at least 70% of its original capacity within that period. Like all EVs, the battery will last longer if it's charged slowly and kept between 20% and 80% charge.
What is Toyota's anti-perforation (rust) warranty?
Toyota has a separate warranty to cover anti-perforation issues – commonly called rust. This lasts for 12 years from the date of first registration and is transferable between owners.
This coverage only applies to rust that arises as a result of a manufacturing defect or fault, and won't cover any rust that's been caused by damage or negligence. Note that this coverage applies to all Toyotas except for the Hilux pickup truck.
Can you extend Toyota's 10-year warranty?
Toyota's additional 10-year warranty cannot be extended by the manufacturer – it's already the longest warranty you can get on any car sold in the UK. Some dealerships and third-party companies might offer an extended warranty for your car beyond this period, but this will be down to you to arrange.
Does Toyota's 10-year warranty apply to all Toyotas?
Yes. Every single Toyota model is covered by the additional 10-year warranty provided it's less than 10 years old, of course, and you have it serviced at a Toyota dealership. That means every model, including the compact Toyota Aygo to the spacious Toyota RAV4 is covered. In addition, the warranty applies to models from Toyota's luxury Lexus brand, too.
