Alfa Romeo buying guide

What Alfa Romeo models are there?

The Alfa Romeo Giulia is the brand’s saloon, which you’d most likely compare against the Mercedes C-Class. Objectively, the interior quality isn’t exactly on par with the Mercedes, and the rear seats may be a little cramped for six-foot passengers, but these foibles are unlikely to matter if you’re drawn in by the styling. You still get plenty of equipment such as part-leather seats and smartphone connectivity.

Alfa Romeo SUV model range

It’s taken quite a while, but Alfa Romeo finally has a small SUV to compete with the BMW X1 and Mercedes GLA. The Tonale is named after a twisty mountain pass (not a part of your foot) and is notable for introducing Alfa’s first plug-in hybrid powertrain. There’s also a 1.5-litre petrol that offers a decent blend of performance and economy. The interior quality and rear-seat space aren’t class-leading, but the Tonale is spacious enough and has that distinctive Alfa Romeo style.

If you need something bigger than the Tonale but don’t want to compromise on eye-catching design, you’ll be interested in the Stelvio SUV. The front end looks the same, but the Stelvio adds a higher ride height that helps you see further down the road. It’s certainly worth being on the shortlist of keen drivers – it’s up there with the Porsche Macan for sporty handling.

FAQs

Alfa Romeo has a shaky reputation for reliability, built on years of models that could be unpredictable. However, that reputation is a little unfair these days. Yes, there may well be some cars with faults, but the majority of cars should cause you no headaches whatsoever if you keep up with maintenance. If you’re drawn in by the Alfa Romeo image and are still a little worried about dependability, you might wish to take out the Motorpoint Extended Warranty when you purchase your car.

Not yet. The Tonale’s underpinnings can support a fully electric powertrain but there’s no word on that yet. In August 2021, the brand announced that it was targeting an all-electric line-up by 2027.

Veloce is a performance-focused trim level that’s a halfway house between standard Alfa Romeos and range-topping Quadrifoglio models. In the Stelvio and Giulia, Veloce cars use a 280hp 2.0-litre petrol engine. On some models, Alfa Romeo offers a Veloce Ti trim level with some of the sporty looks of the Quadrifoglio versions.

Alfa Romeo’s Giulia Quadrifoglio and Stelvio Quadrifoglio are the brand’s high-speed performance models. Think of the Giulia as a rival to the BMW M3, although the Alfa Romeo is arguably better value. The full name is Quadrifoglio Verde (QV), translating to green four-leaf clover, and these fast flagships are signified by a clover badge on the front wings. You also get extra vents, carbon-fibre trim and beefier brakes. Both QV models use a 503bhp 2.9-litre V6 petrol engine that was partially developed by Ferrari.

Q4 is the name of Alfa Romeo’s four-wheel-drive system, so cars with this badge might offer a little more grip in wet conditions. It’s similar to BMW’s xDrive and Audi’s quattro systems.

For well over a decade, every Alfa Romeo has come with a drive mode switch with D, N and A on it. Typically, these stand for Dynamic, Natural and Advanced Efficiency – making the throttle and steering feel sharper or softer depending on your mood. In the Tonale plug-in hybrid, the Advanced Efficiency mode prioritises the electric motor as much as possible.

Yes! Any used Alfa Romeo car for sale at Motorpoint can be financed on Personal Contract Purchase (PCP) or Hire Purchase (HP), so you can spread the cost of your dream Alfa.
