The top 10 Audi Q2 alternatives

The Audi Q2's appeal is obvious – just consider how many you see on the road.

It packs the typical high-quality Audi user experience into an oh-so-desirable small SUV platform. Oddly enough, however, it's one of the few Audi models that doesn't have direct rivals from BMW or Mercedes.

That means most Audi Q2 alternatives come either from other brands or other body styles. We've chosen 10 of our favourite here. Most are available as great-value used cars from Motorpoint.

Mini Countryman

Mini Countryman in green

BMW doesn't make an SUV to rival the Q2 – the entry-level BMW X1 competes with the larger Audi Q3. Instead, it lets its youthful Mini brand take up the slack with the Countryman SUV. This is definitely the least 'mini' Mini you can buy, with lots of room in the second row for tall adults or bulky child seats, plus a big boot that'll swallow a pushchair or a medium-sized dog without complaint. Behind the wheel, however, the quirky dashboard styling, high-tech infotainment system and playful, entertaining driving experience feel much closer to the smaller Mini Hatchback.

Volkswagen T-Roc

Volkswagen T-Roc in green/grey

Under the skin, the Volkswagen T-Roc shares plenty of oily bits with the Audi Q2, but swapping the four-ringed badge out for a VW one means it's a little more affordable both brand new and as a used car. Despite the shared DNA, the T-Roc is actually a little roomier, with more space for rear passengers and a larger boot, making it the slightly more practical choice for day-to-day driving. Like the Q2, the T-Roc is easy and fuss-free to drive, but it has a slightly softer edge, which means a fraction less fatigue when driving long distances.

Audi A3

Audi A3 in blue

Perhaps you like the Audi image but aren't sure about the SUV body style. In this case, take a look at the Audi A3. This spacious hatchback is just about large enough for small families and has many of the same engine options as the Q2. The low-slung body style means the A3 is slightly better optimised for on-road driving than the Q2, with marginally better handling and fuel economy. It's also a touch more affordable, so you can get a newer or lower mileage A3 for the same budget as a Q2.

Mazda CX-30

Mazda CX-30 in red

The Q2's styling makes an impression thanks to sharp angles and upright proportions. Conversely, the Mazda CX-30 is also a small-ish SUV, but it takes a very different approach to its styling. You'll see flowing lines and organic shapes, giving a softer, more elegant appearance than the blockier-looking Audi. Mazda also offers the CX-30 in a selection of rich metallic colours that enhance its graceful looks. It's as good to drive as it is to look at, too, with the brand's signature deft handling and revvy petrol engines that reward enthusiastic driving.

BMW 1 Series

BMW 1 Series (128ti) in white

There might not be a BMW-branded SUV that directly rivals the Q2, but the 1 Series hatchback has similar levels of practicality for the price. It's a much more focused driver's car than the Q2 – especially if you pick one of the high-performance 128ti or M135i models – with rock-solid body control and grippy steering. Just like the Audi, the BMW is loaded with technology – both come with feature-rich infotainment systems complete with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, displayed through responsive, pin-sharp touchscreens.

Volvo EX30

Volvo EX30 in yellow

The Volvo EX30 is a relatively recent addition to the Swedish brand's range, slotting in beneath the larger XC40. It's based on a new electric-only platform shared with other Geely brands including Smart. Despite being battery powered, this premium model is barely any more expensive than the Q2 when buying brand-new. The entry-level 51kWh battery pack claims more than 200 miles on a full charge, or you can upgrade to the 69kWh pack with more than 290 miles. It's zippy, too – even basic models can go toe-to-toe with hot hatches in a straight line.

Lexus LBX

Lexus LBX in red

The Lexus LBX is new to the Japanese brand's lineup but it already makes a strong case for itself. You get the robust build quality, plush materials and excellent usability Lexus is known for, condensed into a small, city-friendly SUV format. It's not a car designed for sporty driving but, instead, to cruise around in comfort. This is made easier by its clever hybrid engine which combines excellent urban fuel economy, EV-like throttle response and smooth, linear acceleration.

SEAT Arona

SEAT Arona in black

If you like the Audi Q2 but can't quite stretch to this posh German option, consider its more affordable Spanish cousin. The SEAT Arona is the brand's entry into the small SUV market and bears a few similarities to the Q2. For one, the Arona also has angular, eye-catching body work, as well as the option of a full suite of infotainment technology in the dashboard. Pick an Arona over a Q2 and you'll get a much newer and lower-mileage car for your money, and may be able to add a faster engine or the highly recommended DSG automatic gearbox.

Toyota Yaris Cross

Toyota Yaris Cross in silver

The Toyota Yaris Cross shares most of its mechanical parts with the Lexus LBX above. That means the same excellent 1.5-litre full-hybrid engine, with the ability to average around 70mpg in town driving. The Yaris Cross looks a bit tougher than the LBX – the first time anyone's ever said that about a Yaris – and its interior is a little more hard wearing at the expense of some of the Lexus's posher materials. It's biggest benefit, however, is the mainstream badge on the bonnet, which means you avoid the premium on Audi and Lexus cars.

Smart #1

Smart #1 in white

The Smart #1 might raise some eyebrows – from its slightly silly name, to the memory of the tiny two-seaters that used to bear the brand's badge. What can't be argued with is this dinky SUV's value for money. A fairly low starting price buys you the same zippy electric powertrain as the Volvo EX30 above, wrapped up in the Smart's ultra-modern sense of style, with flashy upholstery and a huge screen in the middle of the dashboard. If you ever thought the Q2's look was a bit conservative, this might be the SUV for you.
