The Jeep Wrangler is the now-distant descendent of the original Willys MB from the second World War.
It's kept hallmarks of the original car – as well as its impressive off-road chops – but there are several tempting alternatives you could consider. All of these models are available to buy in the UK with right-hand drive.
Save thousands on your ideal off-roader by shopping a wide selection of nearly new and used SUVs for sale at Motorpoint.
Land Rover Defender

Like the Wrangler, the Land Rover Defender trades on its retro-inspired looks, but backs them up with serious off-road ability. Chunky tyres, tall ground clearance and a robust four-wheel-drive system are present and correct – as is a suite of clever active off-road aids to make it easier to keep going in the rough stuff. Entry-level prices are similar to the Wrangler, starting at just above £60,000 for a five-door Defender 110, but beware the options list as prices can rocket upwards if you tick too many options.

Ford Ranger Raptor

If you're not a commercial customer, Ford's Ranger Raptor will end up costing around £60,000, putting it right in the range of the Wrangler. Unlike the Jeep, which has remained admirably compact as most American cars have swollen around it, the Ranger Raptor takes Ford's largest pickup available in the UK and outfits it with bulging wheel arches and chunky off-road tyres. The result is a pretty imposing vehicle but one with astonishing off-road ability thanks to its brutish stature and heavily upgraded suspension setup.
Toyota Land Cruiser

Another 4x4 with a legendary heritage, the Toyota Land Cruiser has recently returned to our shores with a new square-jawed look. Prices are fairly steep at around £75,000, and UK buyers can only pick the 2.8-litre diesel engine, which majors on low-down torque and reliability, but won't get the Land Cruiser going anywhere especially fast. Its off-road ability is nearly peerless, however, with different terrain modes for its mechanical four-wheel-drive system, plus a locking rear differential and electrically disconnecting sway bars.

Ineos Grenadier

Ineos' CEO clearly doesn't like being told 'no'. When Land Rover declined his offer to buy the tooling for the old Defender, he decided to set up a factory anyway to build an off-roader that looks so similar it might as well be the same car. It doesn't use fancy gimmickry to keep going in the rough stuff – just proper mechanical four-wheel drive, lots of ground clearance, and steep approach and departure angles. There are powerful BMW engines under the bonnet, but its old-school recirculating-ball steering isn't great on asphalt and might take some getting used to.
Volkswagen Amarok

The Volkswagen Amarok returns for its second generation and, this time round, it shares its mechanical parts with the Ford Ranger above. That means it offers mostly the same robust off-road talents, and PanAmericana trim brings some extra off-roading equipment including underbody skid trays to protect the engine and a rear differential lock for better traction on slippery surfaces. Completing the look are roof rails above the cabin and a rollover-style bar in the truck bed – perfect for mounting a set of aftermarket spotlights on.

Suzuki Jimny

Sadly, the Suzuki Jimny is no longer for sale new in the UK as the company reduces its fleet emissions average. That said, there are plenty of nearly new and used examples on the used market, with the most recent versions being two-seat Commercial models. Prices are stiff for a small 1.5-litre car but comfortably less than half what you'd pay for a Wrangler. Don't go thinking the Jimny can't cut it off road, however, because this featherweight 4x4 has the mechanical hardware and the tip-toeing ground clearance you need to keep the show on the road.

Toyota Hilux

A famous old Top Gear segment proved that the Toyota Hilux is pretty much indestructible, and will keep going even if you drop a literal building on top of it. This is a pickup that's a little more in touch with its commercial roots than the Ranger above, which gets more luxuries and more power, but the Hilux is cheaper to buy and comes with Toyota's solid-gold reputation for dependability. All versions come with the hardware needed to drive off road, but Invincible X trim adds tough-looking plastic body cladding to protect your paint on the trails.

Land Rover Discovery

Your Wrangler budget will just about stretch to an entry-level Land Rover Discovery in S trim. That buys you a 3.0-litre, 350hp diesel engine which, paired with Land Rover's legendary off-road mechanicals, means the Discovery will keep going long after most big seven-seat SUVs have tapped out. What's more, all this ability comes alongside the Discovery's dramatically improved on-road experience, with soft suspension, excellent refinement and plush interior trimmings.

Isuzu D-Max Arctic Trucks AT35

In a world of Rangers and Hiluxes, there's a risk the Isuzu D-Max ends up as an 'also ran'. That's before you consider the outrageous Arctic Trucks AT35 version, however. You can't miss this model, partly thanks to its lifted, heavy-duty Bilstein suspension, but mostly thanks to the monster-truck 35-inch all-terrain tyres that even the AT35's massively flared wheel arches struggle to contain. Inside, there's leather upholstery, an automatic gearbox and a full infotainment system, so you're comfortable whatever conditions you're driving through.
KGM Rexton

KGM – formerly SsangYong – has carved out a niche on UK roads as a builder of affordable-yet-tough off-road cars. The Rexton is a proper body-on-frame seven-seat 4x4 that's been in the lineup for a while, as rivals like the Mitsubishi Shogun and Nissan Patrol abandoned the UK market. That old-school ladder chassis means it's rated for heavy-duty tasks like towing a braked trailer weighing up to 3,500kg, and should be able to stand up to a few knocks when driving off road.
