Top 5 best Skoda Yeti alternatives

The Skoda Yeti is still a brilliant and characterful SUV, with four-wheel-drive versions available for crossing rugged terrain cheaply and stylishly.

But, with the last examples registered in 2017, the Yeti is becoming an old car now. So if it’s time for an upgrade, we’ve picked out five of the top choices that’ll give you the charm of your faithful Yeti without breaking the bank.

Skoda Karoq

The Skoda Karoq is the direct replacement for the Yeti. While it looks a whole lot more conventional than the Yeti, it’s even more capable and versatile. Mid-spec SE L models and above include the VarioFlex rear seats that gave the Yeti such flexibility, so you can fold or remove the rear seats as you wish for when you’re carrying bulky sports gear or moving house. The Karoq is available with a similar range of engines as the Yeti, too – both petrol and diesel choices, and the option of four-wheel drive.

Suzuki S-Cross

Suzuki’s S-Cross is a car with similar vibes to the Yeti. What do we mean? Well, it’s an affordable SUV with a durable and easy-to-use interior, plus an easygoing driving experience. Top-spec Ultra cars come with Suzuki’s AllGrip four-wheel-drive system that’ll make light work of slippery roads or grassy tracks. Meanwhile, the S-Cross’ mild-hybrid and full-hybrid engines should reduce your fuel costs versus Betty the Yeti.

Dacia Duster

The latest-generation Dacia Duster has the glam to go with the goods, but the last-shape Duster is still an astute buy that’ll serve you well. It’s the king of no-nonsense, offering all the capability and space of more expensive SUVs with nothing superfluous. Mind you, high-spec versions offer creature comforts like Apple CarPlay and a reversing camera, so the Duster will still feel like an upgrade. And all its features are found in an interior that’s super easy to use – even with gloves on. Four-wheel drive is available (but rare), while there’s also a Bi-Fuel version with petrol and LPG tanks. Fill up both and you’re good for around 700 miles.

Volvo XC40

If it’s boxy looks you’re after, you’ll love the Volvo XC40. Its square stance means there’s plenty of space in the cabin for four adults, who’ll think you’ve gone up in the world driving a Volvo. The XC40’s interior is a few degrees more premium than the Yeti’s, and you benefit from an enhanced spec list including LED headlights, digital dials and an electric bootlid. Alongside petrol and diesel engines, the XC40 also offers plug-in hybrid and fully electric options which have the potential to save you money on fuel costs.

Vauxhall Grandland

We end on one of the best-value family SUVs money can buy right now, with the Vauxhall Grandland significantly undercutting rivals such as the Nissan Qashqai and Ford Kuga. That’s a Skoda quality too, of course. Grandland buyers enjoy generous interior space and a big boot, plus a hands-on dashboard and a punchy but frugal petrol engine.
