New Omoda 9 SUV: price, specs and release date

You’re looking at the UK’s longest-range plug-in hybrid.

Well… it will be when first deliveries start hitting the road in June. This is the Omoda 9, a flagship plug-in hybrid SUV that promises 93 miles of electric range – and a total range of over 700 miles with a full tank of petrol as well.

While the smaller Omoda 5 has the Nissan Qashqai in its sights, the Omoda 9 is aiming for posher SUVs such as the Range Rover Velar and BMW X5.

Omoda speaks of its ‘everything-as-standard’ philosophy, which is bad for choice but good for equipment levels. As such, there are a huge number of included features, such as a 1.3-metre panoramic sunroof, front and rear seats with heating, cooling and electric reclining, wireless phone charging, adaptive suspension, park assist and a 14-speaker Sony sound system.

Which you’ll be able to hear in crystal clear detail, because the Omoda 9 also boasts an ultra-quiet cabin. We’re told that the Omoda’s double-laminated glass reduces the in-car noise at urban speeds to a similar level to the ‘sound of light rainfall’ or a ‘modern library’.

The Omoda 9 uses tech borrowed from its sister Jaecoo 7 SUV, although the powertrain details are different. Under the Omoda’s tall bonnet, there’s a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine mated to two electric motors and a huge 34.46kWh battery – bigger than the entire battery in some small EVs! Compared to the Jaecoo, the Omoda gets a smaller engine and a bigger battery.

Together, the engine and e-motors produce a huge 449hp, for a 0-62mph time of 4.9 seconds. In other words, as fast as a 1980s Ferrari 288 GTO.

With 20 driver assistance systems, it’s likely that you might not even need to put much effort in. Meanwhile, there are six drive modes, ranging from Eco, Normal and Sport to Mud, Snow and Off-Road.

Prices start from £44,990, which would undercut its natural rivals if the Omoda lives up to its maker’s claims. Omoda says it’s a large, luxury SUV priced like a midsize one. Sure enough, the price is in line with a plug-in hybrid Toyota RAV4 and a top-spec Hyundai Tucson.

The 9 also comes with a seven-year, 100,000-mile warranty (eight years for the battery pack).
