It costs 30% more to fill up your car today than it did before the cost-of-living crisis

Having run the numbers, we’ve found that UK motorists will spend nearly £1,700 on fuel in 2025.

This means that despite fuel prices gradually falling, car owners are still paying 30% more on average to fill up their car today than they were before the start of the cost-of-living crisis – spending £139.42 on average at the pump each month.

We know that’s a substantial amount of money and that’s why when we were thinking about what we could do to celebrate hitting 20,000 subscribers on YouTube we came up with the idea of giving car owners the chance to half the amount they spend filling up this year.

We’re offering one lucky motorist £840 towards their fuel costs this year – which it predicts would be enough to cover six months' worth of petrol or diesel.

For your chance to win, simply register your interest using the form below and share what you’d most like to see on our YouTube page in 2025.

What can you expect to see on our channel?

Headed up by automotive journalist Tim Rodie and regularly featuring automotive broadcaster and racing driver Rebecca Jackson, our YouTube channel is mainly made up of no-nonsense car reviews designed to help motorists when choosing their next car.

Over the last 12 months, we’ve been experimenting with other long-form video content, including a 450-mile road trip comparing diesel vs electric and a study exploring if car infotainment systems are distracting.

Alongside continuing to review a variety of new-to-market and used cars, we’re working on a range of videos designed to challenge everyday driving myths. Tim and Rebecca will be joined by some well-known experts, as Motorpoint continues with its mission to simplify the world of motoring.

Methodology

To predict how much motorists will spend on fuel in 2025, Motorpoint used this research from the AA and the difference between petrol and diesel costs then and now to work out the equivalent cost in January 2025.

Predictions are correct as of 23rd January 2025.
