What is a coupe?

A coupe is a type of car body style. Coupes generally have longer, sleeker bodies than hatchbacks and, usually, just two or three doors depending on whether they have a hatchback-style bootlid. Smaller coupes might seat just two passengers, while larger ones might have a small pair of rear seats, too. This body style is normally seen as sportier and more elegant than other types at the expense of practicality.

Coupes aren't quite as common as they once were but premium German brands still sell a few coupe models. Keep an eye out for cars like the Mercedes C-Class Coupe, BMW 4 Series and Audi A5.

It's important to note that the definition of 'coupe' has stretched quite a lot for modern cars. You'll find several 'coupe-SUVs' like the Audi Q3 Sportback, plus four-door coupes like the Mercedes CLA.
