What is electric power steering (EPAS)?

Electric power steering (EPAS) is used by virtually all modern cars. It dramatically reduces the amount of effort needed to turn your car's tyres with the steering wheel, especially at low speeds. The system uses an electric motor on the steering rack to add extra force in whatever direction you're turning the wheel, making the steering feel much lighter in your hands. Electric power steering has replaced hydraulic power steering, which uses an engine-driven pump to achieve the same effect – electric setups are more energy efficient and enable related technologies such as lane-keep assist and semi-autonomous driving.
