What is an OLED (organic light-emitting diode)?
An OLED, or organic light-emitting diode, is a microscopic device that emits light when powered by electricity. On their own, they're not really relevant to our day-to-day lives, but they'll have a bigger impact in the world of digital screens. Screens powered by OLED technology are more energy efficient and have better contrast than older LCD-based technology. Already, models like the new Mini Countryman are using OLED screens for their infotainment systems. In theory, this technology should make the Mini's screen easier to see regardless of the ambient light level, as well as weigh less and use less energy. We're also seeing brands like Nissan and Audi start to use OLED technology in their cars' brake lights.
