What is a space-saver spare wheel?

A space-saver is a spare wheel that you can fit onto your car if one of your tyres has a puncture. Usually found underneath the boot floor, a space-saver lets you drive to a garage where the defective tyre can be fixed or replaced. Space-saver spare wheels are much thinner than your car's standard wheels and are limited to 50mph. Most new cars come with a can of tyre foam or a compressor rather than a spare wheel to save weight, although you can usually add one to your car as an optional extra – which we'd recommend for peace of mind if you ever get stranded by the roadside.
