What is a car insurance group?

Every car in the UK is ranked within a specific car insurance group – these range from 1 to 50. Your car's group is determined by a range of factors including its make, model, trim and engine specification – as well as the year it was registered. It has a big impact on how expensive your car insurance policy will be – cars in lower groups like the Kia Picanto and Volkswagen Polo will have relatively affordable cover, while higher-group cars like the BMW X5 or Mercedes E-Class will be comparatively pricey.
