What is a Statutory Off-Road Notification (SORN)?

A Statutory Off-Road Notification (SORN) is an official document that confirms your car won't be used on the road. You might apply for a SORN if your car is broken and you can't fix it for a while, or if you've got a fun summer car that spends all winter tucked up in a garage. When you apply for a SORN on the Government's website, the DVLA will refund you any full months of Vehicle Excise Duty (VED, or road tax) you've already paid. You must not drive your car on the road while the SORN is in place.
