What is a GTI (Grand Touring Injection)?
GTI is an acronym most famously associated with the sporty Volkswagen Golf GTI. As one of the very first hot hatches, the Golf chose that name to highlight its performance credentials – 'Grand Touring' to conjure images of road racing and 'Injection' to highlight its powerful fuel-injected engine. VW is most closely associated with the GTI name and you'll also find it on the Volkswagen Polo GTI and Volkswagen Up GTI. Read our full guide to VW terminology here. Other brands have used this alluring trio of letters, too, on models like the Peugeot 208 GTi and Proton Satria GTi.
