What is a safety cell?
A safety cell is a tough, reinforced steel cage that surrounds the passenger area in a car. Whereas the crumple zones at the front and rear of the car are designed to crush like a drinks can to absorb a lot of the force of an impact, the safety cell must stay rigid and resist deforming to protect the driver and passengers. You won't notice it's there – it's built into the body of the car – unless you have a crash and the safety cell protects you from major harm.
