Kia SUV and car model range explained

When Kia launched in the UK, it sold cars on value for money and cheapness. Nowadays, some of the brand’s cars are competing with premium brands like Audi, BMW and Volvo – although there are still some more affordable choices in the extensive Kia lineup.

All Kias leave the factory with a seven-year/100,000-mile warranty, which is among the most generous warranty cover periods you’ll find. The Korean powerhouse has also keenly embraced electrification, and there’s something for you in the Kia range, regardless of whether you can plug in to recharge or not.

Hatchbacks

Kia Picanto

The smallest Kia car is the Picanto, named after the Spanish word for spicy. It’s a doddle to park, but still manages to offer just enough space for four adults and a couple of cabin suitcases. It’s not fast but it’s very economical and cheap to insure, and the Picanto no longer feels like a cheap car inside. You get a lot of tech that used to be saved for much bigger cars, including a touchscreen, a reversing camera and cruise control. The Picanto’s just been facelifted for 2024.

Kia Rio

It might be named after a city famous for its carnival, but don’t expect the same sort of flair from the Kia Rio. This Ford Fiesta-rivalling supermini is brilliant to own – it’s cheap to run, quiet, comfortable and reliable – and it’s incredibly competent on any type of road. Cheap to buy and filled to the brim with equipment, too.

Kia Ceed

Made famous for being Top Gear’s ‘reasonably priced car’, the Kia Ceed is a sensible, grown-up family hatchback that perfectly balances comfort and fuel economy. It’ll cover long distances with no fuss whatsoever but doesn’t embarrass itself on a country lane either. Its boot is slightly bigger than the space you get in the Volkswagen Golf, Vauxhall Astra or Ford Focus.

Kia Stinger

Sometimes, Kia decides to leave its lane and head a bit more upmarket. The Stinger is a compelling alternative to a BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe or an Audi A5 Sportback, with sleek fastback styling, rear-wheel drive and powerful engines. It’s very entertaining, and makes the traction control surprisingly lenient in the sportier driving modes. Very fast but very thirsty – in other words, a proper GT car.

SUVs

Kia Stonic

A Rio-based SUV that’s decent enough and very good value for money. It’s considerably cheaper than the majority of used SUV rivals, and promises to be easy to live with. How so? The Stonic is economical, not too noisy, easy to drive and reliable. Something that’ll get you from A to B and back again without any worries or drama.

Kia XCeed

Take a Ceed, completely redesign it with new body panels and an SUV stance, and voila – you have an XCeed. To our eyes the XCeed looks trendier than the Ceed, and there’s no penalty for its 4x4 styling – it’s still painlessly affordable to run. Practicality is roughly on a par with the Ceed, so it’s basically a choice of whichever you like the look of or whichever is cheapest.

Kia Niro

When the first Kia Niro launched, it was among the earliest cars to offer a hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fully electric option – called e-Niro – giving you the choice to pick the best one for your needs. You got a practical crossover body combined with delightfully low running costs. The latest one keeps that ethos, but improves things with a more interesting design, increased interior space and the very latest tech, borrowed from the sublime EV6.

Kia Sportage

The latest Kia Sportage is right at the top of the midsize SUV class. It’s a near-perfect family hauler, combining huge passenger space, neat features and one of the biggest boots in the segment. Up front, there’s a bleeding-edge interior with large screens and posh materials, while the Sportage now offers hybrid and plug-in hybrid options alongside a normal petrol engine.

Kia Sorento

Kia’s seven-seat Sorento is a top choice if you want a large family car or a capable tow vehicle. The diesel can tow 2,500kg but, if you’re not speccing a towbar, go for one of the hybrid engines – they’re a bit more modern-feeling and allow you to complete bits of your journey on electric power alone.

Estate cars

Kia Ceed Sportswagon

It has a sporty name, but the Ceed Sportswagon is the less sporty of Kia’s two estates. It’s a Ceed with a bigger boot, so all the same qualities apply from the hatchback, but the SW’s 625-litre boot is very nearly class-leading. That’s a huge amount of space, and you’ll struggle to get a similarly spacious car for the same amount of money.

Kia ProCeed

Kia ProCeed GT static

The ProCeed is another example of Kia not being scared to take on Mercedes – as this swoopier take on an estate body style is very reminiscent of the much more expensive Mercedes CLA Shooting Brake. You trade a little bit of practicality for the extra style versus the Ceed SW above, but the ProCeed is still big enough for family life. It’s only available in sporty trim levels, and also comes with a warmed-up 204hp GT model.

Electric cars

Kia Soul EV

The Kia Soul’s boxy styling has earned it a bit of a cult following, and owners tend to be very happy with their Souls. The latest generation is only available as a fully electric car, and it’s very efficient despite the cuboid shape. It’ll manage up to 282 miles on a charge, and Kia’s range-o-meter is accurate enough to get rid of range anxiety altogether.

Kia Niro EV

The electric Niro offers the style and efficiency of the hybrid models without having to ever visit a petrol station again. It offers a smooth and quiet driving experience, cheap running costs if you can charge at home, and a near-300-mile range.

Kia EV3

The recently launched Kia EV3 is a hatchback/crossover-type electric car that aims to be the new normal. It’s already getting rave reviews for its quality interior and its 379-mile maximum range, plus its relatively affordable price.

Kia EV6

Simply brilliant. The EV6 is a family-size crossover that shares its underpinnings with the Hyundai Ioniq 5. But, where the Ioniq 5 appeals to our nostalgic side with ‘80s arcade styling, the EV6 goes all out on sportiness and futuristic-ness. It makes the most of its electric-only platform, with huge interior space and the ability to charge small electricals from the car’s battery. The 577hp GT range-topper is breathtakingly quick.

Kia EV9

A couple of years ago, a £65,000 Kia would’ve been unthinkable. But the seven-seat Kia EV9 shows that the brand can kick it with premium family buses like the Audi Q7 and Volvo EX90. On-trend styling, a big battery and oodles of state-of-the-art tech make it a compelling choice for well-heeled buyers with the ability to charge at home.
