SEAT SUV range explained

SEAT Arona

The SUV lineup kicks off with the SEAT Arona. At less than 4.2 metres long, it's shorter than family hatches like the Volkswagen Golf, but offers a similar amount of passenger space plus a slightly larger boot. Mechanically, it's related to the Skoda Kamiq and Volkswagen T-Cross, but has angular, more aggressive styling. The TSI turbo petrol engines are exactly the same, however, delivering smooth acceleration and respectable fuel efficiency. We'd recommend picking one with the slick-shifting DSG automatic gearbox if your budget allows.

SEAT Ateca

For many buyers, the SEAT Ateca will be the 'Goldilocks' point in the SUV lineup. This is a spacious five-seater with loads of room for tall passengers to stretch out and a big boot, without being so bulky that you can't take it into the city centre. It's mostly the same car as the Skoda Karoq and Volkswagen Tiguan, but prices on the used market usually mean the SEAT is the most affordable of the three. Performance fans should keep an eye out for the SEAT Cupra Ateca, too, which gets a mighty 300hp engine to embarrass hot hatches.

SEAT Tarraco

The largest SEAT SUV is the Tarraco. It's mechanically very similar to the Ateca, but has been stretched to add a third row of seats in the cargo area. This adds some extra practicality but the sixth and seventh seats are tight, so are best saved for occasional trips rather than regular passengers. Fold the third row down and you'll expand the boot from 230 litres to a gargantuan 700 litres – big enough for even the burliest St. Bernards. Smooth TSI petrols are available but most come with gutsy TDI diesel engines for good long-range economy.

SEAT Mii

The SEAT Mii is the smallest car in the range and one of the smallest cars you can buy full stop. Don't be fooled by its size, however, because this clever little car has a boxy body to make the most of its tiny footprint. Six-foot adults won't exactly feel comfortable in the back – but they will fit – something you can't say for rivals like the Fiat 500 or Toyota Aygo. Just like its mechanical siblings – the Volkswagen Up and Skoda Citigo – the Mii's boot extends all the way to the bottom of the body, so big shopping trips are still possible.

SEAT Ibiza

One of the longest-lived models in the SEAT lineup, the Ibiza small hatchback is also one of its most popular cars. It's always managed to stand out among rivals thanks to its modern, sharp-suited styling. The current model is arguably a little softer and more grown-up than its predecessors, but there's still plenty of flair in its design and driving experience. Its cabin and cargo space are among the very best in class, so this is a small hatchback that could feasibly work as a family car – especially if you don't have small kids in child seats.

SEAT Leon

If you'll be carrying rear-seat passengers regularly, it might be worth jumping up to the SEAT Leon. This family hatch is a bit larger in every dimension than the Ibiza supermini, which means a little more room in the back to stretch out and a bigger boot. Like other SEATs, the Leon lifts itself above the crowd with dramatic styling, including angry, angular headlights and deep creases in the bodywork. A wide range of engines are available including budget-friendly petrols, long-legged diesels and even a plug-in-hybrid option.

SEAT estate range explained

SEAT Leon Estate

Like most family hatches, the Leon feels a bit cramped if you have youngsters with bulky child seats and awkwardly shaped pushchairs to haul around. This is where the Leon Estate shines. Boot space grows from a decent 380 litres to a vast 620 litres, so it can handle prams, dogs or whatever else you plan to throw at it. What's more, the extra practicality comes without compromising the Leon's well-rounded driving experience or handsome bodywork, with the Estate's long roof simply enhancing the attractive surfacing.

SEAT Alhambra

SEAT Alhambra in blue

SEAT no longer makes the Alhambra as a new car, so you'll have to search the used market for one. It's worth doing, however, if you need lots of space on a sensible budget. The long, tall body houses three full-sized seat rows, so even adults in the sixth and seventh spots can get comfy. There's room for soft bags with all seven seats in place, but you can fold the second and third rows if you want to use the Alhambra as a makeshift van. Most versions come with efficient TDI diesel engines for respectable performance and economy.

Cupra cars

Cupra Formentor in grey

SEAT used to reserve the Cupra name for its sportiest cars. However, the brand was separated out into its own separate division in 2018. As before, it continues to make sporty versions of SEAT cars such as the Cupra Leon and Cupra Ateca, but also builds standalone models such as the Cupra Formentor and the upcoming Tavascan and Terramar SUVs.
