Audi A6 Saloon FAQs

The A6 uses many of the same parts and engines that have a proven record across dozens of other Audi and Volkswagen-Group models. Like many other premium cars, however, it doesn't tend to score extremely well in reliability surveys. For the most part, this is because more expensive cars tend to come equipped with more options and extras, which means there are more potential points of failure.

Audi offers a standard three-year factory warranty for the A6. For extra peace of mind, you can specify an extended warranty, which kicks in once the factory coverage expires. This will protect you from the cost of any unexpected mechanical or electrical failures.

The A6 is a large executive saloon packed with features and Audi is a premium, desirable brand. Both of these factors mean maintenance costs for the A6 will be a little higher than the average car, so you should expect to budget a bit more each year to keep it in working order.

It's worth keeping on top of your A6's maintenance and saving your receipts, because that will make sure your car is worth as much as possible when you come to sell it. Missed services and deferred maintenance can easily knock thousands off the value of your car – far more than those services would've cost in the first place.

Audi A6 saloons equipped with the 2.0-litre 40 TFSI petrol engine should return between 36 and 40mpg if driven economically. The more powerful 45 TFSI petrol should see closer to 35mpg, while the now-discontinued 3.0-litre 55 TFSI was not measured using the recent economy testing standards but you can expect around 30mpg in day-to-day use.

The popular 2.0-litre 40 TDI diesel should return between 45 and 50mpg according to Audi's figures. The now-discontinued 3.0-litre 50 TDI has mighty overtaking power but should average more than 40mpg if you drive gently.

You'll also find the 50 TFSI e plug-in hybrid, which blends a 2.0-litre petrol engine with a punchy electric motor. This model claims an electric-only range of 38 miles, which can easily cover a commute assuming you can charge at home or at work. If you plan ahead and make the most of that electric range, you can expect to average more than 200mpg by only using the engine when absolutely necessary.
