About the Renault Austral

In a Renault lineup that includes several fully electric options and a brace of coupe SUVs, the Austral looks a bit more conventional. That’s no bad thing – it’s the same shape as most of its rivals and that shape means it’s practical.

The Austral replaces the Kadjar but feels light years ahead. The styling is bolder – and maybe a bit macho – and the interior design has stepped up too. It helps that the Google-based system is so fast and responsive.

Every Austral is a hybrid. The 1.7kWh battery lets you drive around town on electric power and boosts the efficiency of the petrol engine. Up to 60mpg is achievable, and the automatic gearbox makes day-to-day driving easy.

What versions of the Renault Austral are there?

There’s only one body style and one engine in the Austral lineup, although you do get to choose between three trim levels. We start with Techno – not the music genre – and then above that there’s Techno Esprit Alpine and Iconic Esprit Alpine. Some particularly clunky names, you’ll agree, but the two ‘Esprit Alpine’ trim levels get sporty styling touches inspired by Renault’s racy Alpine brand.

What features does the Renault Austral have?

Stick with the Techno spec and you’ll get the majority of the must-have kit, such as multi-zone climate control, LED lights all-round, wireless phone charging, adaptive cruise control and a reversing camera.

Techno Esprit Alpine gets heated front seats, a heated steering wheel and larger alloys. Top-spec Iconic Esprit Alpine gets all that plus a Harmon Kardon sound system, a panoramic sunroof and self-parking tech.

Further back, there’s a sliding rear seat bench and a boot that offers up to 555 litres of space.

It might only have a three-cylinder, 1.2-litre petrol engine, but the Austral packs a punch. Its electric motors help to produce a total output of 200hp and a brisk 0-62mph time of 8.4 seconds.

You don’t need to charge the Austral. Instead, the onboard battery is topped up from the engine and the braking system. You’ll be able to drive around town on electric power for a good proportion of the time, and doing this will make your fuel economy shoot up.

The Austral replaced the Kadjar as Renault’s midsize SUV and, as is often the way, the new car is a little bit bigger than the old one. The Austral is a few centimetres longer than the Kadjar, although both are 4.5 metres long, give or take. The newer model is also fractionally wider and taller.

The Renault Austral is front-wheel drive – there’s no 4x4 option. In fact, the only four-wheel-drive Renault currently available is the Rafale plug-in hybrid SUV.
