What Vauxhall Astra trim levels are there?

Astra trim levels were simplified in 2019 with the range now opening with Business Edition Nav trim. This includes alloy wheels, air conditioning, cruise control and an infotainment system with sat nav, DAB radio, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Next up is SRi Nav which gains larger alloy wheels, LED headlights, automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, a sports seat for the driver, an electronic parking brake, a soundproofed windscreen and dual-zone climate control.

Griffin Edition is one of the most popular trims in the lineup and adds even larger alloy wheels, tinted rear windows, a contrast black roof, front and rear parking sensors, heated front seats, a heated leather steering wheel, special Griffin badging and floor mats.

At the top of the range is the Elite Nav Premium trim. This version gains a larger central infotainment touchscreen and digital dials for the driver, a rear-view camera, keyless entry and start, part-leather upholstery, front sports seats and even a built-in seat massager for the driver.

Vauxhall Astra interior and technology

The Astra’s cabin might not be the absolute last word in style, but it’s still a comfortable well-made place to spend time. All controls are neatly laid out and, while there’s not an overload of switches, it’s nice that you still get physical controls for the heating and air-conditioning system.

Vauxhall’s infotainment system isn’t quite as smooth or easy to use as the very best in class, but all the features you’d hope for are included as standard. Bluetooth and DAB radio feature across the lineup, as do Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, allowing you to use your smartphone’s apps on the go.

While the cabin isn’t packed to the brim with storage cubbies like some rivals, there’s a good amount of overall space on offer in the Astra. Rear seat space is slightly more generous than you’ll find in a Ford Focus and the square boot will take at least one large suitcase, and possibly more if you load up carefully.

Vauxhall Astra engine range explained

Vauxhall Astra 1.4T 125 petrol

For pre-2020 Astras, the entry-level petrol engine is a 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder making 125hp. This engine can hit 62mph from rest in a little under nine seconds, so will feel relatively relaxed at overtaking speeds.

Vauxhall Astra 1.4T 150 petrol

The nest step up for pre-2020 Astras is the same 1.4-litre petrol but with power turned up to 140hp. This drops the 0-62mph time by a few tenths, helping it feel slightly stronger on the move.

Vauxhall Astra 1.6T 200 petrol

This is a relatively high-performance option for pre-2020 Astras. This 1.6-litre turbo engine makes a square 200hp, helping the Astra complete the 0-62mph dash in 6.6 seconds – pushing deep into hot hatch territory. But it's subtle, with only a red badge and twin exhausts giving this engine away.

Vauxhall Astra 1.2 Turbo 110 petrol

For 2020-and-newer Astras, all petrol options are now served by the same 1.2-litre turbocharged three-cylinder. Entry-level models get 110hp, which is enough to complete the 0-62mph run in 10.2 seconds.

Vauxhall Astra 1.2 Turbo 130 petrol

Also only offered on 2020-and-newer Astras is a 130hp version of the same 1.2-litre unit. This shaves a few tenths off the 0-62mph run, bringing it below 10 seconds.

Vauxhall Astra 1.2 Turbo 145 petrol

The most powerful petrol engine offered on 2020-and-newer Astras is the 145hp version of the 1.2-litre unit. This trims another few tenths off the 0-62mph time.

Vauxhall Astra 1.5 Turbo D 105 diesel

High-mileage drivers might want to consider the new diesel engines Vauxhall introduced to the lineup from 2020 onwards. The first is a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbodiesel with 105hp. This can hit 62mph from rest in a little over 10 seconds and return nearly 66mpg if you drive gently.

Vauxhall Astra 1.5 Turbo D 122 diesel

The other diesel option in the Astra lineup is, again, the 1.5-litre engine but with power turned up to 122hp. This drops the 0-62mph time to 9.7 seconds so will feel a little more relaxed on the motorway, while still being able to average more than 64mpg when driven sensibly.

In the UK, the Astra comes in two versions – a five-door hatchback and a five-door Sports Tourer estate, with the latter having a larger boot.

Buyers looking at nearly new Astras are likely to come across pre and post-facelift cars. Pre-facelift cars first launched in 2015 and continued on sale until the end of 2019. Facelifted cars arrived in 2020 but changes were extremely minimal so it can be quite tricky to tell the two apart. The only real visual difference is the front grille, where pre-facelift cars have two chrome bars either side of the badge that meet at the edges, while post-facelift cars have single chrome bars flanking the badge in a wing-like pattern.

The Astra is a little less than 4.4 metres long, which is roughly in line with other cars in this class. It measures up a few millimetres longer than the Volkswagen Golf and Peugeot 308, but a hair shorter than the Ford Focus. The Astra Sports Tourer estate is around 4.7 metres long – again, within a few millimetres of the respective Golf, Focus and 308 estate models.

Despite its relatively city-friendly footprint, the Astra scores well for practicality. Five adults can fit in reasonable comfort, although elbow room in the back seats is in short supply. The rear doors also open wide, so belting in children or their car seats is slightly less of a pain. Cargo room is also generous with a usefully square load area and a ribbed boot floor to stop items rolling about.

Engine choices for the Astra lineup were updated at the end of 2019. All choices are decent so you just need to decide how much performance and what fuel type you'd like.

Vauxhall doesn't have the best reputation for long-term reliability but newer Astras use engines that are also found in various Citroen and Peugeot models – so these engines are well-tested, and they seem to be generally reliable. The majority of nearly new Astra buyers won't come across problems but, if you'd like total peace of mind, consider taking out an extended warranty.

The Astra is a good-value family hatchback that offers lots of space, lots of tech and economical petrol and diesel engines. It's great at long-distance journeys and inner-city commutes, so it's worth considering if you're also looking at cars like the Ford Focus and Kia Ceed.

The exact figure depends on the engine and body style you choose – the estate can't tow as much as the hatchback – but the current 1.2-litre petrol can manage a braked trailer weighing up to 1,350kg and the 122hp 1.5-litre diesel with a manual gearbox manages up to 1,450kg.
