The Vauxhall Mokka had quite a glow up in 2021 – gaining sharp new styling and a beady 'visor' front end.
However much of an improvement this was, however, it still might not be your cup of tea. So, if you're after a handsome compact SUV that's a little less 'Luton', check out these 10 Vauxhall Mokka alternatives.
Most of these models and plenty more besides are available as great-value nearly new and used cars from Motorpoint.
Ford Puma

Ford's entry into the popular small SUV segment is the Puma. This has effectively replaced the Fiesta as the brand moves away from building hatchbacks, and now has just enough room for a small family. The rear seats are tight, so you might have to agree a compromise with the front passenger if you want to fit a bulky child seat or lofty adult back there. Its cargo-carrying ability outshines the Mokka, with an impressive 456-litre boot, and it's a bit more fun to drive too, thanks to better body control and more reactive controls.

Peugeot 2008

Peel back the bodywork and the Peugeot 2008's oily bits are mostly the same as the Mokka, but they're draped in the French brand's angular, feline styling. The 2008's cabin is a bit flashier than its British sibling too, with more modern styling and fancier materials, plus more high-tech digital driver's dials with a nifty 3D-effect. It's the more practical choice over the Mokka, with better rear-seat room and a larger boot – although this does result in very slightly larger exterior dimensions.

Audi Q2

Drivers looking at brand-new Mokkas would struggle to cross-shop them against the pricier Audi Q2. However, if you're looking at the used market, this desirable German alternative is much closer in price to the Mokka than you might expect. Inside, you'll find all the hallmarks of a premium car including plush materials, elegant design and a clean, modern infotainment setup. You also get a choice of smooth turbocharged engines under the bonnet, which work well with the optional DSG automatic gearbox.

Renault Captur

The Renault Captur's always been one of the better-looking small SUVs. It's also one of the easiest to live with thanks to a rear bench seat that can slide forward or backward to prioritise rear legroom or cargo space as needed. Nothing about the Captur experience is exactly thrilling, but it gets a lot of the basics right – the ride is comfortable, the handling well-judged and material quality is surprisingly high. Entry-level petrol models feel a bit gutless at faster motorway speeds so we'd choose one of the excellent E-Tech hybrid models instead.

Skoda Kamiq

The Mokka happily trades some outright practicality for its stylish bodywork, making it a little tight if it's your only family car. If you're after a small SUV that can handle larger loads, check out the Skoda Kamiq. This Czech alternative has similar exterior dimensions to the Vauxhall, but packs way more interior space into its compact footprint. That means proper space in the back for tall adults, and a boot that'll easily carry a pushchair or medium-sized dog. It's also calm and quiet on the road, with sure-footed handling on narrow urban streets.

Jeep Avenger

If you want a stylish SUV, but don't fancy the Mokka's sense of style, why not draw inspiration from the original off-roader? That's exactly what the Jeep Avenger does – taking the bluff styling and iconic seven-bar front grille from older Jeep models, and translating them to a modern compact SUV. Most versions are front-wheel drive, sharing only their good looks with real-deal Jeeps, or you can try out the 4xe mild hybrid, which adds a punchy electric motor to both axles to improve off-road traction.

SEAT Arona

The current Mokka has certainly found a new groove but SEAT has a long history of making regular cars with sharp, attractive styling. Its Arona compact SUV is no exception, with deep styling creases down its flanks and angular front-end styling. Under the skin, it's mechanically very similar to the Skoda Kamiq, with similarly generous passenger space but a slightly smaller boot. It also has more-or-less the same selection of zippy turbo petrol engines which, again, we'd suggest pairing with the DSG automatic gearbox.

Nissan Juke

If you're shopping small SUVs with a sense of style, it feels wrong not to include the Nissan Juke. Not only was this one of the very first compact SUVs on sale, it was one of the first that led with bold styling that helped it stand out in a car park. This second-generation Juke keeps the original's eye-catching looks but is a much better vehicle underneath, with a well-judged driving experience, impressive material quality and a substantially improved infotainment setup that includes native Google software on later models.

Kia Stonic

It's easy to lose the Kia Stonic among this crowd of talented small SUVs. There aren't many areas where it leads the field, but a critical consideration for nearly new car buyers is how much warranty cover remains. Thanks to Kia's seven-year factory warranty, you can buy a nearly new Stonic with years of coverage left over so you can rest easy knowing you'll be protected from unexpected repair costs. It's as easy to use as it is to own too, with just enough space for adults in the back and a generous standard equipment list.

Volkswagen T-Cross

The tiny Volkswagen T-Cross is somehow slightly smaller than the already diminutive Mokka. It's a touch more practical in use, however, thanks to its more upright styling inspired by the larger Volkswagen Tiguan. Inside, it feels like a typical Volkswagen with a simple, ergonomic layout and robust build quality. You also get handy sliding rear seats so you can choose between more rear legroom or more cargo space as needed. Refinement is strong so you can rack up hundreds of miles without fatigue, and most mod cons are included as standard.
