Patent images of the upcoming MG ZS EV replacement have been published by China’s MIIT organisation.
The images show how the car will look when it launches in the UK in early 2025. There’s a bold new front end with slim LED daytime running lights above the headlights that are combined with air vents.
There’s typical SUV body cladding around the wheel arches and on the lower panels, as well as roof rails and mirrors with integrated LED lights. Around the back, there’s a full-width light bar and some MG 4 cues.
While the petrol MG ZS will live on, this car won’t be called the ZS EV. We’re yet to find out what it will be called, although the badge on these patent images seems to say MG S5 EV, which makes sense given that the new car will be an SUV and bigger than the MG 4 it’ll be based on.
If the new car’s underpinnings are shared with the MG 4, we can expect 51kWh and 64kWh batteries to be available. These should give a real-world range of roughly 200 and 250 miles respectively, while 150kW charging will enable a 10-80% top-up at a public fast-charger in under 40 minutes.
The new model measures just under 4.5 metres long, so it’s grown by a couple of centimetres over the outgoing ZS EV. Practicality should get a boost over the current car’s, which is still very decent with lots of passenger space and a large boot.
Value for money is a key part of MG’s appeal in the UK, so we’d expect the new electric MG SUV to start from around £30,000. That’s roughly equivalent to the outgoing ZS EV, while the MG 4 starts from £27,000.
The new car should also benefit from a seven-year warranty and a similarly long warranty for the battery.
