Remember the old Vauxhall Frontera? The name and body style are the same but everything else has changed.
While the name badge was last seen 20 years ago on a rugged 4x4, the new 2024 Vauxhall Frontera is bang up to date with modern styling and a choice of hybrid petrol or fully electric powertrains. And there's even a seven-seat option.
Now, Vauxhall has revealed how much the Frontera costs – with a big surprise. The electric one is the same price as the entry-level hybrid model, which is the first time that's happened in the UK. We've become accustomed to electric cars being a lot more expensive than petrol equivalents when new – the Corsa electric is almost £10,000 more than a petrol one!
2024 Vauxhall Frontera prices and specs
Available in two trim levels, the new Frontera starts from £23,495. The more powerful of the two hybrid engines costs an extra £1,500, while the jump from Design trim to the sportier GS trim is a reasonable £2,400, meaning the most expensive Frontera still costs less than £28,000 before options.
Design trim gets auto lights and wipers, plus a reversing camera and rear sensors, cruise control and lane-keep assist. GS trim adds alloy wheels, body-coloured bumpers, front parking sensors, climate control and blind-spot monitoring. A Comfort Pack is optional on GS and adds heated front seats, a heated steering wheel and windscreen, and roof rails for £800. Meanwhile, GS cars with the hybrid engine can have the third row of seats fitted for £550.
Like all recent Vauxhalls, the Frontera has a ‘Vizor’ design at the front, with the LED headlights encased in a wide black bar. It’s a chunky, boxy car with pronounced wheel arches and a clearly defined crease above the rear wheels.
Vauxhall Frontera interior
Inside, every Frontera gets the same curved panel featuring two 10-inch screens as the latest Mokka and Astra, but with a more upright dashboard design and a greater focus on versatility. There’s a big central storage area, somewhere to put a tablet device – with a strap to hold it in place – and a wide dashboard stowage area above the glovebox. Wireless phone charging is available in the area under the centre console, and there are phone pockets in the backs of the front seats.
Sat nav comes as standard, as does Apple CarPlay and Android Auto phone connectivity.
Additionally, the Frontera boasts a large 460-litre boot with the seats up, which is 50 litres more than the Vauxhall Crossland offers. The Frontera will take over from the Crossland as Vauxhall’s small-but-practical crossover option. With the seats down, the 1,594-litre boot is bigger than the space you get in the electric Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer.
Unlike the Crossland, the Frontera is able to squeeze a third row of seats in – although only on the top-spec hybrid model. We expect these sixth and seventh seats will be quite tight, so they'll probably only appeal if you'll use the extra seats infrequently.
Vauxhall Frontera performance and engines
Every Frontera comes with some level of electrification. There's a 1.2-litre petrol hybrid (featuring a 28bhp electric motor integrated into the gearbox) with a total output of either 100hp or 136hp, and 0-62mph times of 11 and nine seconds respectively. Fuel economy figures haven't been released yet, but more than 50mpg should be achievable.
The electric Frontera uses a 44kWh battery for a 186-mile range. It can fast-charge at up to 100kW, which would enable a top-up from 20% to 80% charge in 26 minutes. But with a meagre 113hp and heavy batteries to cart around, the Frontera EV is the slowest version in the lineup.
Next year, a 'Long Range' version is coming with up to 248 miles of range. This version is likely to have a more powerful motor, although it'll be more expensive as well.
