New XPeng G6 SUV – price, specs & release date

There’s another new brand on the block – here’s what XPeng (pronounced chow-pung) is bringing to our shores.

The XPeng G6 is a midsize electric coupe SUV, and it’s here to take on the Tesla Model Y, BMW iX2 and Audi Q4 e-tron Sportback.

It boasts sleek, confident styling and has a modern LED lightbar across the front end. Like recent Hyundais, the headlights are hidden in air vent clusters lower down the bodywork. The back end features XPeng lettering spread wide across the bootlid, and more than slight hints of Ford Mustang Mach-E and Porsche Cayenne Coupe.

Standard Range versions have a 66kWh battery for a claimed range of 270 miles, while the 87.5kWh Long Range model jumps to 354 miles. That’s very close to the Model Y’s maximum of 373 miles. The G6 gets a heat pump as standard to maximise cold-weather efficiency, while fast-charging rates of 215kW and 280kW for the Standard Range and Long Range respectively mean a 10-80% topup can take just 20 minutes.

Both versions manage the 0-62mph sprint in between six and seven seconds, which is competitive and should be more than enough power for daily duties.

Inside, you’re greeted by a 15-inch touchscreen – including wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, neither of which are available in the Tesla – and a 10.2-inch digital driver’s display. The kit list is generous; as standard there are 20-inch alloy wheels, heated front and rear seats, cooled front seats, dual wireless phone charging, an 18-speaker stereo, a panoramic sunroof and a birds-eye-view parking camera.

Standard Range versions start from £39,990 – just underneath the incoming expensive car supplement for road tax – while Long Range versions are £44,990. White paint is included, while silver, grey and black paint costs £700. The Fiery Orange shade is a £900 option.

First deliveries will take place in March, and UK distribution and aftersales is taken care of by International Motors Ltd – which also covers Subaru, Isuzu, Ora and Haval.

In time, the G6 will be joined by the brand’s G9 flagship SUV and an X9 seven-seat MPV.
