What is GPS?

GPS stands for Global Positioning System and is a catch-all term for the satellite navigation systems found in your car and your smartphone. These systems use a network of satellites to triangulate their position on the ground. They then compare this information to existing maps to accurately plot your position and guide you to your destination. Being pedantic, the actual GPS Global Positioning System is a satellite network run by the US military, with similar networks operated separately by Europe, China and Russia.
