Lexus is Toyota's luxury brand and, for three decades, it's been taking on the traditional German market leaders.
The company already enjoys a legendary reputation for building reliable, long-lasting cars – now it's cementing that position with its excellent 10-year factory warranty.
We'll walk you through the details of Lexus' warranty, which is broadly the same as Toyota's 10-year warranty. That includes what is and isn't covered, what exclusions apply, and what you have to do to keep the warranty active.
How long is Lexus' manufacturer warranty?
You can think of the Lexus warranty as being split into two periods. There's an initial three-year factory warranty with a 60,000-mile distance limit. Once this expires, you're entitled to an additional 12 months of warranty coverage each time you get the car serviced with Lexus, until the car reaches 10 years old or 100,000 miles.
The new 10-year scheme was introduced on 1 June 2021. However, it automatically applies to older Lexus models provided the warranty's stated terms and conditions have been stuck to.
What does Lexus' 10-year warranty cover?
Lexus' warranty offers a fairly typical level of protection for owners. Any mechanical or electrical part that isn't considered a wear-and-tear item which fails without external influence – i.e. breaks due to a manufacturing defect – will normally be covered by the warranty.
That means any failure of the engine, coolant system, on-board electrics or active safety systems, for example, that wasn't caused by user error or neglect will be eligible for repair or replacement under warranty. The cover also includes the price of any labour needed to carry out the repair or replacement. Be aware that labour unrelated to the warranty repair, such as removing a tow bar, may be charged separately.
A more detailed list of parts included in coverage can be found in Lexus' warranty terms and conditions, but key components include:
- Engine parts
- Fuel system
- Cooling system
- Gearbox and driveline
- Suspension
- Steering
- Brakes
- Air conditioning and heating
- Electrical parts
- Body components such as sunroofs
- Hybrid and EV components (hybrid and EV batteries are covered separately)
What does Lexus' 10-year warranty not cover?
Lexus' warranty won't cover any damage or failures that you cause to the car. For example, any crash or accident damage – whether it was your fault or not – won't be covered by the warranty. In addition, any problems caused by driving the car too hard or failing to keep up with its specified service schedule won't be covered.
If your car is modified with any non-standard parts, you'll also find that the warranty cover won't apply. This includes any third-party performance upgrades or software. Be aware that this exclusion applies even if these modifications were performed by a previous owner.
The warranty also doesn't cover wear-and-tear items, as these are considered consumable parts that will get used up and replaced during normal driving. Examples of wear-and-tear items include:
- Filters
- Brake pads, linings and shoes
- Clutch disc, cover and bearing
- Wheels
- Tyres
- V belts
- 12V starter batteries
- Fluids
- Spark plugs
- Rubber components
- Bodywork and paint
- Interior trim
- Any noise repairs or adjustments
Is Lexus' 10-year warranty transferable?
Yes. As long as the warranty terms and conditions haven't been broken, then the 10-year warranty automatically transfers between owners until the car reaches the age or 100,000-mile distance limit.
That means all the used Lexus cars for sale at Motorpoint still qualify for the brand's 10-year factory coverage. You'll simply need to have the car serviced at a Lexus dealership to unlock each subsequent 12-month coverage period.
How long is Lexus' hybrid and EV battery warranty?
The battery packs in Lexus' hybrid cars are guaranteed for 10-years alongside the standard car's warranty, as long as you've kept the car serviced with Lexus. Once the 10-year period is up, you can access up to five extra years of battery coverage by having an annual battery health check – these checks are included as standard if you have your car serviced by Lexus.
Lexus also makes a handful of fully electric cars. Their high-voltage battery packs are guaranteed to retain at least 80% of their original capacity for the first eight years or 100,000 miles. If you service your Lexus EV at a Lexus dealership, you'll receive a free battery health check – having this check annually entitles you to up to two additional years of battery coverage, giving 10 years in total.
What is Lexus' anti-perforation (rust) warranty?
Lexus guarantees its vehicles against perforation (rust) that forms as a result of manufacturing defects for 12 years with no mileage limit. This is broadly the same coverage as most other brands offer.
Be aware that if your car starts to rust as a result of unrepaired crash damage, or from another source that's deemed to be due to misuse or neglect, the warranty coverage won't apply.
Can you extend Lexus' 10-year warranty?
There's no option to extend Lexus' 10-year coverage directly from the manufacturer. Lexus dealerships may individually offer extended warranty programs beyond this age.
If you choose to buy a used Lexus from Motorpoint, you'll have the option to add an extended warranty that kicks in once the factory cover expires. The cost of coverage will vary depending on your car's model, age and mileage.
Does Lexus' 10-year warranty apply to all Lexus models?
Yes. Every Lexus model can access the brand's extended 10-year warranty. Once the original three-year coverage expires, you can access each additional year of coverage by having your Lexus serviced at a Lexus dealership. This also applies to used Lexus models as long as they're under 10 years old and 100,000 miles.
