MG might not be the British-owned operation it once was, but its latest range of affordable models has proved a hit on these shores.
Now part of Chinese giant SAIC, MG builds a range of practical, well-priced cars that offer loads of equipment and features for the price. It also has one of the longest warranties available on the market.
This guide will talk you through MG's seven-year warranty. We'll look at its terms and conditions, the exclusions and what's covered, so you can decide whether an MG is right for you.
How long is MG's manufacturer warranty?

For all MG models registered after 1 September 2019, the brand offers a seven-year factory warranty in the UK. MG3 models registered from 1 September 2018 and MG ZS cars from 1 September 2017 also have seven years of coverage. Coverage on MG models prior to this was for five years. The seven-year warranty has no mileage limit for the first 12 months, then an 80,000-mile limit for the remainder of the period.
If you plan to use your vehicle as a taxi or private hire car, you'll need to inform your MG retailer for your warranty coverage to apply. In this case, petrol-powered MGs used as taxis or private hire are covered for 12 months with a 20,000-mile limit. Hybrid and EV models used for taxi or private hire purposes enjoy three years of coverage with a 60,000-mile limit. Full details are available in MG's warranty terms and conditions.
What does MG's 7-year warranty cover?
Like most factory warranties, MG will cover you for any mechanical or electrical failures within the period that happen as a result of a manufacturing defect. In other words, a component that breaks during normal use – not as a result of external damage, user error or neglect – would be covered under the policy.
The warranty only covers parts that aren't expected to wear out or break during normal use. Some parts, such as tyres and brake pads, are considered wear-and-tear items and aren't covered by the warranty. Examples of parts that are covered include the engine, coolant system, fuel system, brakes, steering, suspension and body modules such as sunroofs and windows.
What does MG's 7-year warranty not cover?

MG's warranty won't cover you for any failures that arise due to external damage caused to the car. That means, if you have a crash, none of the repairs or replacement parts in that instance would be covered – regardless of whether the accident was your fault. This rule also applies if you're deemed to have caused damage to the car through misuse, such as neglecting the service schedule or taking part in racing events.
You'll also find your warranty cover voided if you've added any modifications to the car – even if those modifications are totally unconnected to the part that failed. That also applies to any third-party software or digital features that get installed on your vehicle. These exclusions will affect you even if the car was modified by a previous owner. Note that official MG dealer-installed accessories won't void your warranty.
As mentioned, wear-and-tear items aren't covered by the seven-year warranty so you're expected to replace them when needed. MG provides separate shorter warranties for these parts, for example:
- Clutch components – 24 months
- Brake disks and linings – 12 months
- Drive (V) belts – 36 months
- Filters – until first service
- Wiper blades – 6 months
- Fuses – 12 months
- 12V (starter) batteries – until first service
- Wheel bearings, ball joints, bushes, track rod ends, dampers and rubber components – 36 months
Is MG's 7-year warranty transferable?
Yes. MG's seven-year factory warranty automatically transfers to the car's current owner, provided none of the terms and conditions have been breached. This can happen as many times as you'd like as long as it's within the stated seven-year and 80,000-mile limits.
That means most of the used MG cars for sale at Motorpoint still have a sizeable chunk of their original manufacturer's warranty remaining. For each separate vehicle listed on our site, you can see exactly how much warranty cover it has remaining.
How long is MG's hybrid and EV battery warranty?

MG's selection of self-charging-.hybrid, plug-in-hybrid and fully electric cars all use high-voltage battery packs that are covered slightly differently to the rest of the car. This is because a small amount of capacity fade is expected over the lifetime of these packs, so the warranty needs to distinguish between normal degradation and excessive degradation.
For MG, its hybrid and EV battery packs are covered for eight years and up to 100,000 miles. Warranty coverage kicks in if the pack's capacity degrades below 70% of the figure it had when new within this period. The policy technically only covers any repairs needed to bring the pack's total capacity back above that 70% figure but, if a repair is deemed impossible, then the company will replace it with a new or reconditioned battery pack.
What is MG's anti-perforation (rust) warranty?
MG includes an anti-perforation warranty for seven years with no mileage limit. This essentially covers any rust that 'perforates' the car's bodywork from the inside out – i.e. rust caused by a manufacturing or material problem.
Rust on the outside of the vehicle is usually caused by external sources that break the car's protective paint layer, such as unrepaired accident damage. This kind of rust isn't covered by MG's warranty.
MG stipulates that your vehicle requires an annual bodywork inspection by an MG dealer or approved repairer for this cover to remain valid.
Can you extend MG's 7-year warranty?
MG doesn't offer the option to extend its seven-year warranty from the factory, although individual MG retailers might offer their own separate warranty products.
Used MG cars at Motorpoint include the balance of their factory warranty. You also have the option to add an extended warranty that kicks in once your original cover expires.
