BMW i5 buying guide

About the BMW i5

Besides the optional green flash on the numberplates and a couple of ‘i’ badges, there’s little to tell the i5 apart from a petrol-engined 5 Series. It has all the 5 Series trademarks nailed down – there’s a state-of-the-art interior, space for four adults to sit in plush comfort, and superb long-distance cruising ability.

There’s no need to worry about range, because the i5 manages up to 354 miles on a charge and can top up at an astonishingly fast 205kW. Stop at a motorway service station and you’ll be back to over 300 miles of range in around half an hour.

What versions of the BMW i5 are there?

There’s a choice of saloon or estate (Touring, in BMW speak) body styles and three trim levels – Sport Edition and the more common M Sport and M Sport Pro. It should be fairly simple to pick your ideal i5, then, and especially so given that there’s just the one powertrain choice in the standard i5. There’s a standalone i5 M60, too, but this is a bit like an electric BMW M5 and is £30,000 more expensive than the i5 eDrive40 version.

What features does the BMW i5 have?

Every i5 includes a whole host of standard features, including a Harman Kardon sound system, park assist, adaptive LED headlights, online connectivity and BMW’s IconicSounds package, developed for electrified models by revered composer Hans Zimmer. While real leather is an option, most cars come with more sustainable Veganza leather upholstery. You’ll find full details of each particular car’s equipment list on the vehicle features tab in our car advert pages.

Is the BMW i5 a good car?

The BMW i5 could well be the pick of the 5 Series range, especially on the used market where prices are comparable with petrol 5 Series models. Pick the electric one and you’ll enjoy blissfully smooth acceleration, excellent refinement and lower running costs if you can recharge at home or work.

BMW i5 motor range explained

BMW i5 eDrive40 84kWh

The regular i5 provides an ideal mix of range and performance. The 84kWh battery (81.2kWh usable) means a long driving range, even at high speed, while the 340hp electric motor punts the i5 from 0-62mph in just six seconds. Like classic BMWs, it’s rear-wheel drive for great balance and handling.

BMW i5 M60 xDrive 84kWh

Want super quiet electric power that’ll pin you back in your seat? The range-topping i5 is the 601hp, four-wheel-drive M60, with a 0-62mph time of just 3.8 seconds – that’s as fast as a Lamborghini. And yet it should still manage over 300 miles to a charge when driven at a more sedate speed.

BMW i5 FAQs

Yes, whichever i5 you pick has more than enough performance. The regular i5 eDrive40 cracks the 0-62mph sprint in just six seconds, while the raging inferno that is the i5 M60 xDrive cuts that to a supercar-rivalling 3.8 seconds. The top speed is 120mph for the standard car or 143mph for the M60.

Plug in to a normal 7kW home wallbox and a full recharge takes 13 hours – so if you started charging when you get home from work, the car would be fully charged by the time you wake up. But that’s charging from 0%, so if you plug in at 20% or 30% charge then it’ll take considerably less time. You could plug the i5 into a three-pin household socket, but doing so will take over 43 hours to fully recharge.
