BMW was the first car maker to combine an SUV body with a coupe roofline when it launched the X6 in 2007, basing it on the already hugely popular but boxier X5. Three generations later and the X6 is still going strong, thanks to its trademark style, stand-out driving dynamics and mightily capable off-road performance (which proves equally useful for man-sized potholes and muddy car parks).

There are two different generations of used BMW X6 for sale at Motorpoint – later examples of the model produced from 2015 to 2020, and the all-new generation introduced in 2020.

So check out all the info below, then have a look at the selection of the used BMW X6s available at Motorpoint…

Used BMW X6 buying guide

What engine is in a used BMW X6?

The latest generation of used X6 cars for sale is offered with both petrol and diesel engines. The diesels are 30d, 40d or M50d, all of which are different twists on the 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbocharged engine, but the latter with a whopping four turbos! The petrol range starts with the 3.0-litre six-cylinder 40i, and progresses up through the V8-powered M50i and X6M.

The previous model offered the same diesel line-up, but no petrols in the UK other than the high-performance X6M, with its incredible 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine.

All used BMW X6 for sale come as standard with an automatic gearbox and xDrive all-wheel drive.

What is the body style of a BMW X6

Both generations of used BMW X6 available at Motorpoint have a distinctive SUV coupe body, but the 2020-on generation is 26mm longer, 6mm lower and 15mm wider. If it sounds like a small change, visually the newer model appears substantially longer and lower.

Which trim options can I choose from when buying a second hand BMW X6?

Later examples of the 2015-2020 X6 available at Motorpoint are either specified in the higher-spec and highly desirable M Sport or M Sport Edition trims, or are standalone high-performance M Performance models.

Standard M Sport equipment includes 20-inch alloys, adaptive M suspension, front and rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera, heated front sports seats, and the BMW Professional Multimedia system (see Technology, below), while M Sport Edition highlights include 21-inch alloys, carbonfibre interior trim inserts, Harman Kardon audio and privacy glass. M Performance models (the M50d, M50i and X6M) feature uprated performance, handling and braking.

Trim levels for the 2020-on X6 start with the Sport, M Sport and M Performance. Even entry-level Sport is extremely well equipped, featuring adaptive air suspension,19-inch alloys, full Vernasca leather upholstery, electric heated sports seats, leather steering wheel, ambient interior lighting, cruise control, rear-view camera, front and rear parking sensors, and aluminium detailing. M Sport upgrades to more purposeful bodystyling, 21-inch alloys, high-gloss Shadow Line exterior trim, M Sport steering wheel, Aluminium Tetragon interior trim inserts and anthracite headlining. M Performance model add uprated performance, the M Sport differential and adaptive M suspension for sharper handling, M Bicolour Cerium grey exterior trim, M seatbelts and a Harman Kardon surround-sound system.

What technology can I find in a BMW X6?

As standard, the 2015-2020 X6 is equipped with Professional Multimedia Infotainment, featuring a 10.25-inch screen controlled by a rotary dial, sat-nav, a 20GB hard drive, Bluetooth and DAB radio. There’s also Apple CarPlay smartphone connectivity.

The 2020-on used BMW X6 upgrades to the new BMW Live Cockpit Professional infotainment system and the BMW Operating System 7.0. It combines a 12.3-inch central screen (controlled by touch, rotary dial or voice commands) with a 12.3-inch digital instrument binnacle ahead of the steering wheel. Naturally sat-nav, Bluetooth, USB ports and DAB radio are all part of the deal.

BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is also standard, and be controlled with voice commands initiated by simply saying ‘Hey BMW’. Whether you want to adjust the heating, change radio station or programme the sat-nav, the digital assistant is at your beck and call.
