BYD buying guide

What used BYD models are there?

BYD’s first model to reach UK shores was the Atto 3, an electric SUV the size of a Volkswagen Tiguan or Kia Sportage.

There’s also the BYD Dolphin hatchback and the BYD Seal saloon. Soon, we’ll start getting a smaller SUV called the Atto 2, as well as a larger SUV called the Sealion 7.

All of those cars are electric, but BYD also sells a plug-in hybrid SUV called the Seal U DM-i. Catchy name, you’ll agree.

The majority of BYD’s models are electric, and the ones that aren’t fully electric are plug-in hybrids. If you want an electric BYD, the brand offers a family-size hatchback, an executive saloon or a couple of SUVs.

BYD is a huge global carmaker that has a couple of decades of manufacturing experience so, while it’s new in the UK, its cars have already been knocking around in other countries for several years. A quick scroll of the internet suggests BYD owners are happy with their purchase and haven’t had many or any issues.

Yes, BYD launched in the UK in March 2023, and has since launched five new models – a hatchback, a saloon and a trio of SUVs.

BYD stands for ‘Build Your Dreams’, which you probably wouldn’t believe if it wasn’t written on the bootlid of the Atto 3.

Most of BYD’s models are fully electric, apart from the plug-in hybrid Seal U DM-i SUV – which has a petrol engine alongside the battery and electric motor.

Yes, BYD models have a CCS2 charger, which includes the UK standard Type 2 connector. That means that BYDs can charge from a home wallbox, or from a three-pin plug socket. While you’re out and about, the Atto 3’s 150kW capability means a 10-80% charge can take 44 minutes.
