MG3 buying guide

What MG3 trim levels are there?

With just Excite and Exclusive Nav trims to pick from, choosing an MG3 is pleasantly straightforward. Both look the same, too. Excite kicks things off with rear parking sensors, two-colour alloy wheels, air conditioning, LED daytime running lights, all-round electric windows and an eight-inch touchscreen with digital radio and Apple CarPlay.

Exclusive Nav adds part-leather seats, sat nav, cruise control, a reversing camera and two extra speakers.

MG3 interior and technology

When you consider that the MG3 is one of the cheapest cars you can buy, it doesn’t do too badly inside. It has supportive seats that make long journeys comfortable, and there’s more space for adults to get comfy than in similarly priced city cars. The eight-inch infotainment system has all the expected features, even if its graphics feel a little like a Fisher Price kids’ tablet.

If you have an iPhone, you can get around this by plugging your phone in and selecting Apple CarPlay, which brings your media and navigation apps onto the touchscreen. It also means you don’t need to choose the Exclusive Nav to get sat nav, as you can use your phone’s apps to get around.

MG3 boot space and dimensions

Measuring a whisker over four metres long, the MG3 is about the same size as a Ford Fiesta. The MG3’s wheelbase – the distance between the front and rear wheels – is actually marginally longer than the Fiesta’s, so passenger space is perfectly decent. The 285-litre boot is not far off the Fiesta’s, and is about the same amount of space as you get in a Toyota Yaris. There are Isofix child seat points on the outer rear seats, but note that you can’t fit a car seat – Isofix or not – onto the front passenger seat.

MG3 engine range explained

(Most popular) MG3 1.5 VTi-Tech petrol

The 106hp petrol engine is one area where the MG3 can’t quite compete with costlier supermini rivals. It has about as much power as a Ford Fiesta or Hyundai i20 but feels outdated in comparison. Getting up to 60mph only takes 10.4 seconds, although you’ll have to work the engine very hard and it generally doesn’t feel very quick. Its 43mpg estimate is off the pace of the latest mild-hybrid small cars, but then the MG3 will typically be cheaper to buy. It’s cheaper to insure than some of its rivals, such as the Fiesta, too.

FAQs

The MG3 is a small five-door hatchback with a couple of trim levels and one petrol engine. It was given a major facelift in 2018 with more modern styling and the inclusion of a touchscreen with iPhone connectivity and, from 2020, the top-spec Exclusive includes iGo sat nav as standard.

As it’s a relatively simple car, the MG3 should have little to go wrong. If anything does start misbehaving, the MG3 has a seven-year/80,000-mile warranty that makes the Fiesta’s three-year/60,000-mile cover look rather meagre.

MG3s offer the space of a Ford Fiesta or Toyota Yaris at the price of a much smaller city car, so they offer good value for money – and its long warranty should give peace of mind if anything goes wrong. The MG also offers the essentials in modern tech and connectivity, but could be more fun to drive.

With sensible-sized tyres and brakes, the MG3 shouldn’t cost too much when it comes to consumables. MG’s servicing costs shouldn’t be expensive, and you can take out a service plan to spread the cost of routine garage visits over a number of months – you’ll need your registration number when you sign up.
