Subaru Levorg buying guide

About the Subaru Levorg

Chances are, if you know the Subaru Levorg exists then you probably know a little bit about it already. It’s an estate car with a petrol engine, an automatic gearbox and four-wheel drive – more for all-weather security on the road than for crossing lakes and mountains. It’s a smart-looking car with plenty of standard equipment and lots of driver assistance tech. Subaru’s all about safety these days, so the Levorg makes for a reassuring family car.

In terms of accolades, the Levorg scooped the Car of the Year 2020 award in Japan, and has seen unexpected success racing in the British Touring Car Championship.

What versions of the Subaru Levorg are there?

There’s not much choice if you’re shopping for a Levorg. One body style, one gearbox, one trim level and six metallic colours. UK cars are all in GT spec. Pre-2019 cars (notable for their large bonnet scoop air intake) come with a turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol engine, but these are particularly rare; post-2019 cars come with a non-turbo 2.0-litre, which can feel a bit gutless when you’re trying to accelerate quickly.

What features does the Subaru Levorg have?

The Subaru Levorg has plenty of features, starting with grippy four-wheel drive and an easy automatic gearbox. Every Levorg also comes with sat nav, a rear-view camera, cruise control, heated leather seats, keyless entry and bright LED headlights.

There’s an equally long list of safety tech, helping to take the stress out of driving. You’ve got adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring and hill-start assist, among other things.

Is the Subaru Levorg a good car?

While it’s a little thirsty and perhaps not as modern-feeling as some of its rivals, the Levorg promises to be an absolute joy to live with. It’s incredibly safe, as we’ve mentioned, but it’s also well-equipped and spacious. What’s more, it promises to be very reliable, and it’s backed up by a five-year, 100,000-mile warranty. It’s a rare car, but those who have bought a Levorg tend to be very happy.

Subaru Levorg engine range explained

Subaru Levorg 2.0i petrol

In the Levorg’s 2019 facelift, Subaru swapped the car’s older turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol engine for a naturally aspirated 2.0-litre one. It makes 150hp, which is plenty for decent on-paper acceleration (0-62mph takes a brisk nine seconds). In real life you might feel like you’re having to work the engine hard, and fuel economy tops out in the low 30s.

Subaru Levorg FAQs

Yes, the Levorg comes with four-wheel drive as standard, although it won’t be much use off-road. Think of it as giving extra grip in wintry weather on asphalt roads.

As well as safety, one of the top reasons to buy a Subaru Levorg is for its reliability. Subaru’s core customer base often live far from big towns and cities, and we’re told that Subaru buyers are usually very happy with the reliability of their cars.

The Subaru Levorg will cost a little more to run that something like a Volkswagen Golf Estate or a Ford Focus Estate but, if the rest of the Levorg package stacks up for you, you’ll probably be able to overlook its thirst. Look for a car registered after April 2017 and you’ll save yourself around £60 a year in road tax.
